We are proud to announce... The Terlingua Star Park!
A bright Moon washes out the Milky Way and yields less visible stars. The brighter the moon, the more noticeable the effect. Through the telescope, faint galaxies and nebulae get challenging. But, we get to look at the Moon, and the Moon is awesome, and I know at least an hour's worth of neat things about the Moon!
Honestly, our favorite nights aren't pitch black. The 3 days after new moon gives the perfect balance of the Moon to look at without washing out the sky. And two nights after the full moon, our programs end with the moonrise, the most dramatic way I know to finish a program. A little moonlight on the Chisos Mountains while the Milky Way blazes overhead is something special.
If you want the darkest possible sky for deep sky objects, new moon and the nine days prior are optimal. But don't cancel because there's a Moon out. We never do.
Built in partnership with Far Flung Outdoor Center and Big Bend Remote Imaging Observatories, it's a multipurpose amphitheater under some of the darkest skies in North America.
Located just off TX-118, less than two miles north of the Y in Study Butte, it is home to both our Public Star Parties and the semi-private Star Park Experience. Grand opening is October 1st, 2026!
Public Star Parties are our economy program — $25 per adult, open to everyone, during the busy season (Oct-Apr) at The Terlingua Star Park. Great introduction to the night sky.
The Star Park Experience is our premium small-group program — $99 per person, groups of 4-10, with a 5-1 guest to telescope ratio, zero-gravity recliners, and personal Nikon binoculars for everyone. The best bang for your buck in Big Bend.
Private Tours are exactly that — we load up the truck and come to you. Same premium equipment, your group only, right at your lodging. From $599.
Knowledge of the night sky and the ability to share it clearly is a specialized skillset. A two hour tour represents seven hours of labor with setup, teardown, program preparation, and travel.
Each event deploys $10,000+ in optical equipment, along with the supporting infrastructure that makes it reliable and safe: vehicles, trailers, power, storage, insurance, office, tax, and all the other little things.
Frankly, while Astro Mucho is a premium experience, we are significantly more affordable than comparable private astronomy tours in destinations like Joshua Tree, Zion, Jackson Hole, Sedona, and Boulder. And, we match McDonald Observatory's price on public tours!
🪐 The finest mobile telescopes on the market, and then some.
Our flagship is the CPC 1100, an 11" Schmidt-Cassegrain that weighs 65 pounds and behaves like a 9-foot telescope thanks to fancy mirrors in the tube. Maximum magnification and clarity on planets, galaxies, and deep sky objects. We have two of them.
Alongside it, the AT125EDL is a 5" apochromatic refractor — sharper, higher contrast wide field views that complement the CPC perfectly. Star clusters and detailed planetary shots look stunning through this glass.
The SeeStar S50 smart telescopes run quietly alongside our visual scopes, stacking live astrophotography of the same targets so you can compare what your eye sees to what the camera has captured over time.
We also deploy an Orion XT-10g and a Nexstar 8SE, with more on the way. Every scope runs premium 2" eyepieces for the widest, sharpest views possible.
👨👩👧👦 Trained service animals only at The Terlingua Star Park. Anything goes for private tours!
Please don't let your dog knock over the telescope. Thank you!
👨👩👧👦 Absolutely — we love sharing the sky with kids.
They thrive in the public tours, but struggle in our Star Park Experiences. The latter is geared toward older children and adults. You know you kids best though and we won't say no.
🌧️ If we have to cancel due to weather and can't reschedule, you'll receive a full refund.
We make weather calls at least 2 hours before showtime and will reach out personally to discuss, and reschedule or refund if necessary.
⏳ Programs run two hours.
We may go longer, but we're probably hungry.
📆 95% refund if canceled more than 7 days out. 50% refund if less than 7 days.
Weather exceptions apply — if we cancel due to weather and can't reschedule, you’ll get 100% back.
🔭 Absolutely not.
In fact, the less you know, the smarter we sound! Whether you’re a total newbie or a seasoned sky nerd, we’ll meet you where you are.
🧥 Check the weather before your show — it might be cold, or it might be perfect.
Just dress properly. Be ready for temperatures 10-15° F cooler than forecast because of all the time you will be spending outside.
Bring water, a red light and binoculars if you have them, and your questions!
We don't have concessions yet, you're welcome to bring your own cooler. Please don't be the name of my first policy.
🪐 Astro Mucho's guides are paid well for their knowledge and scarcity.
Tips are not expected, but always appreciated. If you had a stellar time (pun intended), gratituity is the best way to say thanks to your guide for going above and beyond. It truly makes us feel good every time. Thank you.
📷 Yes — just no flash, please!
You’re welcome to take photos during the show. We recommend "night mode". We also use a SeeStar S50 smart scope during experiences and can share those photos with you.
🌌 Sure — if they’re visible that night!
Most celestial objects are seasonal. Saturn won't be part of the program until September. Jupiter's gone in June. Venus just gets brighter until November.
Let us know if there’s something you’re hoping to see, and we’ll tailor the night accordingly.
🏙️ Almost.
We only operate where we have permission. We've only been denied permission by one place. We charge $50/hour for additional travel time.
We do not have commercial use authorizations for either park, because they require $2 million in liability insurance.
